Tripwires are a great way to make extra income in your business. But you don’t want to break the bank just to get them set up!

How to Set Up A Tripwire on Your Website for Free | Have you ever wanted to set up a tripwire but don't want to pay for all the expensive tools? We've got you covered, and will show you how to do it for free!

The good news is that if you have a WordPress website then you can set your up for free! No need to pay for LeadPages or ClickFunnels!

What You Need

Before you can set up your tripwire, you need to have these elements in place.

  1. A freebie connected to your email marketing platform (our favorite is ConvertKit)
  2. A related paid product set up with its sale price (we personally use SendOwl but use whatever your sales platform is – the key is to make sure that this sale price isn’t publicly available on your website)

Once you have these elements in place then you can start putting your tripwire together.

Free Tools to Create Your Landing Page

One of the benefits of using LeadPages or ClickFunnels is that they are super easy to design and have all the pieces you need right within the platform. The downside? They can get expensive! LeadPages starts at $37 a month, while ClickFunnels starts at $97 a month. 

When you are just starting out, those prices just aren’t reasonable (especially when you can do it for free!)

A Page Builder

Elementor is our favorite page builder that works with just about any theme. It is SUPER easy to use and have a very robust free version. This will allow you to easily design a beautiful tripwire page right on your own website.

Scarcity Timer

What makes a tripwire so effective is the fact that it is a limited time offer. This means you need a scarcity timer. Our favorite tool is
Evergreen Countdown Timer. There are paid versions, but the free version works perfectly fine. This allows you to create a timer that automatically redirects once the time is up!

How to Set Up A Tripwire

Step 1: Set Up Your Scarcity Timer

You want to set this up first so you can drop it in your tripwire page. We tend to use 15 minutes for all of ours. So set up the timer to redirect after 15 minutes. We set the redirect to the FULL price item. 

Step 2: Design Your Tripwire Page

Think of this as a sales page! It should talk about your offer, the benefits, and how it is only available at the discounted rate for a certain period of time. Put the scarcity timer right above the purchase button with a reminder that this offer is only available for a limited time.

For example “Save 75% for the next 15 minutes!”

Step 3: Update Your Form Action

Think about what current happens when someone subscribes to the related freebie. Most email marketing platforms will allow you to set the form action to redirect to a page. This is what you want to set to your tripwire page.

If you have multiple forms, you will need to update each one. If you use a third-party plugin to add your opt-ins to your website, you will mostly need to set the redirect in the plugin itself. 

And it is as simple as that! You now have a fully function tripwire page!
